Here’s what you need to know about taxes and finances in West Flanders.

Opening a bank account

As a professional, you will need to open a local bank account to receive salary payments and manage daily expenses. Popular banks include KBC, ING, Argenta... Opening an account is pretty straightforward and can be done online. You will need proof of identity, proof of address, and your national registration number.

Payment methods

Flanders widely accepts debit cards and has embraced contactless payments. In fact, since July 2022 all retailers have to provide customers with at least one electronic payment method.

Mortgage, credit & other loans

Check with your bank what your options are when buying or renting a property in Belgium.

Income tax

If you have income in Belgium (e.g., remuneration or rent) but you are only here for a limited period of time, you have to submit a non-resident income tax return. If you are here for a longer period of time, then you have to submit a regular tax return. All official information can be obtained from the Federal Public Service Finance website.
